A career path in QA is the progression of roles a testing professional moves through over time, from entry-level positions such as manual tester up to senior, lead, or principal engineer and management tracks.

In software quality assurance, a career path typically begins with an entry-level QA tester role focused on manual test execution and defect logging. As skills grow, practitioners move into mid-level positions—automation engineer, performance test engineer, or security test specialist—where deeper technical expertise is expected alongside ownership of test strategy.

From there, two broad tracks diverge. A technical track leads toward roles like Senior QA Engineer, Principal Test Architect, or Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), demanding advanced coding, tooling, and architectural judgment. A leadership track moves through QA Team Lead and Test Manager toward Director of Quality or VP-level positions, where people management, budgeting, and cross-functional collaboration dominate the work.

Certifications such as ISTQB Foundation and Advanced levels are widely recognized markers of competency at different stages and can accelerate progression between levels. Domain specialization—performance, security, accessibility—also shapes individual paths, sometimes creating a hybrid trajectory that combines deep technical expertise with consulting or test consultancy responsibilities.
