Automation Engineer

An automation engineer is a software testing professional who designs, builds, and maintains automated test frameworks and scripts to validate software quality across the release cycle.

Automation engineers translate manual test scenarios into executable scripts, typically using tools such as Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, or Appium, and integrate those scripts into CI/CD pipelines so that feedback arrives within minutes of a code commit. Their work spans unit, integration, end-to-end, and performance test layers, depending on the team's coverage strategy.

The role sits at the intersection of development and QA. An automation engineer reads application source code to understand testable boundaries, collaborates with developers on test framework design, and works with release teams to ensure the automated regression suite runs reliably on every build. Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language—Python, Java, JavaScript, or C# are common—is a baseline expectation.

Seniority levels vary considerably. Entry-level positions focus on writing and maintaining existing scripts; mid-level engineers own framework architecture decisions; senior engineers define tooling strategy, mentor peers, and align automation coverage with business risk. Certifications such as ISTQB's Advanced Level Test Automation Engineer provide a structured competency benchmark recognized across the industry.
