Test management

Test management is the discipline of planning, organizing, monitoring, and controlling all testing activities within a software project to ensure quality goals are met on schedule and within scope.

Test management spans the entire software development lifecycle, covering the creation of a test strategy and test plan, allocation of resources, scheduling of test cycles, and tracking of progress against defined exit criteria. It provides the structural layer that connects individual testing tasks to broader release readiness criteria and project objectives.

At its core, test management coordinates three interdependent streams: test planning (scope, approach, effort estimation), test execution oversight (environment configuration, defect tracking workflow, and execution status reporting), and test closure (evaluation reports, lessons learned, and metrics archiving). Tools such as TestRail, Xray for Jira, Azure DevOps Test Plans, and TestLink automate much of this coordination by linking test cases to requirements in a traceability matrix and feeding results into a reporting dashboard.

In agile contexts, test management adapts to shorter cycles. Rather than a single upfront plan, teams maintain a living test strategy, update execution plans sprint by sprint, and rely on continuous defect triage to keep backlogs actionable. Metrics such as defect density, defect removal efficiency, and test execution progress replace milestone-based reporting as the primary signals of quality.
